Crow's Nest

Captain’s musings about the Sea and its Global Operations.

Captain’s Introduction

I am an 80-year-old sea captain with over six decades of hands-on maritime experience. My lifelong journey has been shaped by the sea—spanning a distinguished career in the merchant marine, extensive involvement in sailing, and a deep commitment to the art and craft of shipbuilding. From navigating vast oceans to overseeing the construction and maintenance of seaworthy vessels, my work has always been anchored in tradition, precision, and resilience. With a wealth of knowledge gained through years at sea and in shipyards, I remain deeply connected to the maritime world and continue to share my expertise with the next generation of seafarers and shipwrights.

A Journey Through the Seas and Shipyards

As a young man, I began my career as a Captain of large container vessels, charting courses across nearly every ocean on the planet. After more than 15 years navigating the vast expanse of the world’s waters, I made the transition into a new chapter—becoming a shipbuilding surveyor. I often reflect on those early days, where the lessons learned from my time at sea shaped my approach to shipbuilding and design. My generation of seafarers witnessed firsthand the rise of containerized shipping—what we now know as the box trades—transforming global maritime commerce into the powerhouse it is today. The evolution of these massive vessels, from the early days of containerization to the cutting-edge giants of the modern era, stands as a testament to the dynamic and ever-evolving nature of the maritime industry.
